If congregants are “stumbled” by a member’s beard, they will be expected to shave “for the sake of the conscience of others”.
If the individual does not comply, he will likely face extreme social pressure and criticism from freinds. family and other members of the congregation for not adhering to the direction of the elders.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are especially strict when it comes to sex and dating. Jehovah’s Witnesses view masturbation as a form of sexual immorality. If the elders discover an individuals habit of masturbation, and doesn’t stop, the elders will consider this a serious sin that is grounds for disfellowshipping.
They are further taught that masturbation leads to homosexuality, and that mentally deranged people are notorius masturbators.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are directed to abstain from any form of sexual activity before marriage, including actions uch as “passion-arousing heavy petting” or caressing of breasts.
If a Jehovah’s Witness engages in such activities outside of marriage and this becomes known to the elders in the congregation, the individual will be called into a meeting with the elders to be questioned and councelled. If the person doesn’t demonstrate repentance or a desire to change they could be disfellowshipped.

Jehovah’s Witness Rules About Eating, Drinking, and Smoking
While Jehovah’s Witnesses do not allow getting drunk, Jehovah’s Witness culture revolves heavily around eating and drinking. Getting drunk on numerous occasions can land you in trouble, but, in my experience, this behavior doesn’t seem to be as heavily policed as other less serious rules.
Overeating is supposedly a sin according to their Bible but is rarely disciplined, despite obesity being common among the group.
With regards to eating, drinking, and smoking, Jehovah’s Witnesses are not allowed to:
- Use tobacco, sell tobacco, or work for a tobacco company.
- Use a vape, hookah, etc.
- Eat anything that contains blood products, such as black pudding.
Jehovah’s Witness Rules About Charities
Jehovah’s Witnesses are taught that the primary mission should be to help people spiritually, not materially. The leadership clearly states that members should not give the impression that the organization cannot assist any person materially.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are not allowed to volunteer their time or donate funds to other churches, and any spare time and money are expected to be given to the Watchtower Society,
Jehovah’s Witnesses are not allowed to:
- Donate to other churches/charities.
- Join support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Jesus’ comments in John 8:44 was a wake-up call for me. The scribes and Pharisees were worshipping Jehovah, and Jesus literally told them that the god they serve was a liar from the beginning and a murderer.

I’d like you to complete a reading comprehension test, because it’s really quite concerning that John 8:44 is clearly not speaking about God, I mean for one, it refers to this “father” as a “he” and not “He”, this is extremely important when looking at references to God. He is clearly talking about the fact that these humans’ “father” “leader” is the Devil, and not God, as it says in John 8:42 “If God was your father you would love me”.
There is a clear differentiation between the two, you just have to read all of it to understand something so simple a 10 year old can figure it out.

That poster is NOT a Biblical scholar, and has NOT read the Bible, and has NOT learned Hebrew. I have met that type before. He is an obnoxious atheist who pretends to have read the Bible (as all cool atheist have done it), but only repeats what he has heard other atheists say online. He is also known as a failed abortion.
The specific number is most likely from this video, or some similar source. The video states that only those instances in the Bible where a specific number was given are included.
A real scholar would know that Satan is not found in the book of Job. If you read Job, and Satan is mentioned, you are reading a mistranslation. The Hebrew word (I have actually studied Hebrew, but I don’t claim to know Hebrew, as I have only scratched the surface, yet) used is “hasatan”, which is not a name, but a common noun (and “common noun” is a linguistic term that refers to nouns like “cat”, “house”, “water”, etc., as opposed to “proper nouns”, like “John”, “Mary”, “God”, “Satan”, etc.), which means “the opposer” or something along those lines. The “ha-” prefix is the definite article “the”.
The book of Job also makes it explicitly clear that it is God specifically that is tormenting Job. The unnamed servant of God referred to as “the opposer” is just doing God’s work. Thus that “10” should be added to God’s number.
Also, Job’s children didn’t come back at the end of the book. Job got 10 new kids, that were more beautiful than the first ones … or at least his three new daughters were extremely beautiful. Let’s forget about the average looking daughters that God killed with the help of his opposer-angel.
He does have a point about John 8:44, though. The first lie in the Bible is when God tells Adam that the fruit is poisonous, even though God knows the fruit is a source of knowledge. God is essentially telling Adam, “Google is dangerous! Don’t use it, or you will die!”
The first murderer some might, if they realize that God never killed Adam and Eve, say was Cain, but I say it might have been God in the flood. Cain killed Abel, right, but that can be excused by the fact that Abel was a psychopath and a danger to the community, including to Cain’s children. Abel was after all the inventor of killing, as he had mauled innocent sheep. If Abel had such a depraved mind as to invent the slaughter of animals, what might he then do to humans!
Any real scholar would also know that a concordance doesn’t give the meaning of words. The job of a concordance is to tell where in the Bible each word is used, and how it is translated in each case. It is not the job of the concordance to judge whether a translation is correct or not. To look up the meaning of a word, you use a dictionary, not a concordance. Sure, a concordance may be used to figure out its meaning, but that’s through reading the word in context in Hebrew. The English translation is irrelevant.
But sure, I looked the word “howah” up in The Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (HALOT), an actual dictionary, and it says “disaster”. It also mentions that the related Ugaritic word “hwt” means “spell, curse”.
However, it is not clear what kind of grammar one should employ to get “yehowah” from “howah”. You can’t just ad a strange syllable and expect it to reflect a real etymology. “ye” is used in verbs with singular third person subjects, but “howah” is not a verb. HALOT does list two verbs with the consonants “hwh”, with two meanings each, giving four meanings in total: 1. to fall, snow, 2. to fall on someone, 3. to become, 4. to lie, stay lying down. None of them refers to “disaster” (which is a noun). If I interpret the dictionary correctly, “to become” has the form “howeh” and not “howah”.
It is possible that the failed abortion is suggesting that the initial “Je” in “Jehovah” is just some added consonant that is fake, but the “ye”, which it is in Hebrew, is really there.
It is correct that the letter “J” doesn’t exist in Hebrew. But neither does the letter “A”, or the letter “B”, or the letter “C”, or the letters “D”, “E”, “F”, “G”, etc. Letters are the specific shapes written in an alphabet. Consonants and vowels, on the other hand, are something pronounced. The offender in this case is a consonant that phoneticians refer to as a voiced postalveolar affricate, the way “G” is pronounced in “George” in English. That sound doesn’t exist in Hebrew or Greek. But Biblical Hebrew, at the time the Old Testament was written, didn’t have the voiced labiodental fricative, either, which is what is usually written “v”. I was charitable and took his “hovah” as “howah”, but I felt I wanted to point that out as well.

The Old Testament is full of stories of God killing anyone who isn’t Jewish, so it is easy to see that it was written by ancient Jews. The Gospels don’t seem to fit into the Bible at all, unless you ignore most of the Old Testament. By that I mean the actions and message of Jesus don’t seem to follow on from the books in the O.T., apart from the prophesy of a Messiah. The personality of the Father described by Jesus doesn’t seem anything like the violent god of the O.T. I know Jesus told us that he was like the Father, but he didn’t act or speak like the god of the O.T. In a nutshell, Jesus was a nice guy, but the god of the O.T. wasn’t. The only explanation I can suggest is that the god of the O.T. reflects the personality of the writers of the O.T. Sorry for the ramble, but I have spent a lifetime trying to make sense of the Bible, and I can’t. And one other thing, the Book of Revelation is anything but!

The reason the people died was not because they were not Jewish but because there was uncontrolled and unfathomable sin. Such wickedness was to an extent that He did not want His creation to suffer anymore. This is who God is in the Old Testament. In Exodus 34:6 Moses asked the same thing and God showed him an incredible thing. His response was “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness, 7 maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, a forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. If you take the Bible seriously, which I don’t. It was written over thousands of years by people who believed different things. In the OT Jehovah was a warrior God. In the NT it was about love and tolerance. The Bible writers try to smash the two together. But I agree. Big J has a higher body count. Satan was not even thought of as Satan as we think of him until the NT.
Perhaps better than defining evil one’s self, ask Christians to list behaviors they use to identify evil. Chances are they will include such behaviors as murder and genocide, animal and human sacrifice, torture, child abuse, animal abuse, theft, slavery, rape, incest, cannibalism, betrayal and lying. And if asked about personality traits, they will likely mention megalomania, sociopathy, narcissism, etc. Their God claims to hate such behaviors. Yet their God is guilty of committing, ordering and/or condoning all the above behaviors.
The OT is basically a copy of the Sumerian Tablets that were written thousands of years before the Hebrew Scriptures. The Levi priest copied and compiled the content of became the OT in 587 BCE while in captivity. This is when they came up with the idea on One God. Monotheism was born with a God named Yahweh (Jehovah). The “Elohim” (which means gods) of Genesis and the OT scriptures were a higher more advanced alien civilization. They were viewed and worshipped as “gods” because of their superior technology and knowledge. One of their chief gods was named “‘Enlil”. Enlil was pure evil and is actually the one referred to by the god Yahweh.
The New Testament is made up only of the books that the Catholic Church authorized. (Red Flag) They and others have also changed the wordings of scriptures to fit their doctrines and ideology. Some of the scriptures are still accurate but many are not. Other books like the book of Enoch and the book of Thomas were left out because they did not fit with the church’s thinking.

All that studying and your translation is still very literal. Very few things in the Bible are ever literal. I’m sure even now there are Scholars that keep studying the original manuscripts that still exists and even they know most of what they’re reading isn’t literal. I don’t know Hebrew and I never read the manuscripts myself and even I know that much, which means you haven’t fully finished translating.

A lot of this seems to be outdated. Where are you getting your information from? Have you changed things that are no longer accurate? There are definitely a lot of ridiculous things that are still true though.

Not true. The majority of the above-listed “offenses” are subject to disciplinary action. In most cases, this comes in the form of a judicial hearing, likely to end in disfellowshipping, where the offender’s family will be required to shun them and cut them off. Under those conditions, free will is impossible. Good for you that follow these rules voluntarily, but most do so in fear of shunning.
Like I said on an earlier comment: the list is outdated. The majority of those things you put as “offenses” are no longer considered that. Many of those things are now overlooked or have loopholes to them if you look hard enough for them. When I was a kid, loopholes were all I looked for when it came to every aspect of being a JW. “If you don’t look, you won’t find” even the Bible says that, but it also apples to the Bible itself when looking for such loopholes.
It has ALWAYS been voluntary. After all there’s no rules against anyone showing up or not to the meetings and everyone here at one point or another VOLUNTARILY showed up to one weather they were once JW or not. It was their choice. Same applies to our opinions here, we chose to write them or not. Most of those “rules” have loosened up a bit since the 80’s or 90’s. Just like times that are changing, so is the religion. Anyone going to a meeting now would see a difference between 10-15 years ago.
This does not mean it still doesn’t affect people under families that still participate in these.

I personally thank God daily for leading me towards a path that allowed me to see what a cult they are. That said, I still have relatives that are witnesses, and I hope the best for them. They seem happy enough and that’s good enough. Do I think they are brainwashed? Well, I think they belong to a religion that gives them very little say in what they can and can not believe, so yes, I believe there is some brainwashing there. It’s a religion that basically says you have to believe what the elders teach you, if you question those teachings to any extent you will be reprimanded up to possibly being disfellowshipped. You won’t be able to speak with your friends and family. You won’t be allowed a chance to speak for yourself or defend yourself publically. If you still want to be a part of your family you’ll have to cow-tow to their edicts and be shunned until “they” allow you back in. So let me restate that…yes, it is a brainwashing cult!

I would like to add (as a defector and still Christian), many items on the list are abstained by many Christian churches. Some of them were counted illegal in many states until recently. Some of them are absolutely spot on as an exclusive practice within this organization. Brain washing is real, the NWT has been “modified” for the agenda. Most accept love this org. because of the initial sense of being accepted whatever your circumstances. Any of the “cult” members (myself included previously) will NEVER accept being misled and demonizing anyone who speaks out of the faith. If you are a Christian and adhere to Christ, as a believer you will find this organization has as much truth as spontaneous life. I was a Jehovah’s Witness for 18 years. My mom and dad gave me the OK to stay or leave. I left and never looked back. Here I am, 42, married to a ‘worldly’ woman, and I still feel the repercussions of that decision. Numb to birthdays and holidays. Dating was always a challenge, much less explaining to my wife about my upbringing. Dealing with the bullying at school that accompanied with being a Witness. That kind of trauma does indeed lasts. Now I always question when my wife will leave due to my inexperience and skepticism. Because if it, my introverted side is very much a part of my life.
I was raised in this church, but always knew without doubt it was wrong. My immediate family were all baptized, I was the only one who was not. My brother lost his life to suicide because of their teachings of disfellowship and disassociation. When he made a mistake he believed with all of his heart that God had abandoned him and that he was not worthy. What kind of religion does this to its people? Worse yet, my other sibling broke nearly every single rule but was never subjected to the horror they put my brother through. Because I’m not baptized, they are not required to shun me, but they have actually asked me numerous times why I have a problem with their religion. The fact that they cannot see what they’ve done and what they are doing is exactly what happens to people in a cult. It’s very difficult to watch what is happening to them and to those they’ve been converting, it’s sickening. Even though I am not part of that religion and never have been, being subjected to they’re teaching through having to attend church (5 meetings wk – 3 hours worth through the week 2 hours on Sundays and of course door to door on other days), there was no way to get through that unscathed. Sadly, the number one rule of any cult is to not read what or listen to anything contradictory because lies are always exposed when exposed to light.
Yes the brainwashing is incredible. Nobody would imagine the level to which people can have an outside force take almost complete control of their brain, belief system, thought processes. Almost all rational thought gets switched off and everything is what the cult tells them to think.

I don’t believe that would be why your brother tried to take away his own life. I once tried to commit suicide as well and I have also been raised JW. The reason why I tried to do was because I felt the entire world ignored me, including my family and that put me in such a depressive state that I tried to commit suicide. It had nothing to do with religion, but rather it just had to do with people in general. That’s just your excuse to justify his actions, but if you never asked him or didn’t ask him enough when he fell into depression as well(everyone who thinks about suicide falls into that state of mind) or you didn’t ask him enough, then that’s on you.

Twin girls with JW parents/family graduated from h.s. 3 years ago. For the past 4 or 5 years they have been walking/running around the same block, with no deviation, often from morning until night. Nobody understands this. They work part time at a local shop. They could have spent all this time going to community college, getting a certificate or degree, and having a job (such as medical technician, etc.) to last them a lifetime. What is going on with them? Is it the parents??

I attended a few J. W. meetings that are held during the week but not a Sunday worship one.
Just before one of those meetings I was told that I should wear long trousers, a tie, and preferably a suit. When I attended those meetings.
I can’t see the logic of how I’m attired makes any difference to God or my wish to know more about a religious group with the possibility of being a member.
How do you reconcile this attitude by J. W. with 1 Samuel 16: 7?
RIDICULOUS…GOD does not look at us that way. He only cares about the condition of our hearts. You want to join them, words of warning, be cautious. They are FULL Of all kinds of rules and regulations that make no sense whatsoever. Some are biblical, but MOST are not. They are crazy and make no sense. Study and know what you are getting into. It is listed in the book of cults. It’s very strict. Many of their members have committed suicide b/c of the strictness of that religion. They are programmed and brainwashed for the most part. Do Jehovah’s Witnesses use any sort of weaponry (usually on a person’s feet and/or lower legs) which can cause debilitation, amputations, etc. I often see people in local stores (Las Cruces, NM) seemingly rubbing their thumbs against finger joints to elicit pain and screams from others they are following. It is terrifying to see someone raise their paint leg to reveal what I can only describe as radiation burns, skin bubbling and peeling. It is truly terrifying. Thank you.
I’m not sure what you are asking. Are you asking if Witnesses use some sort of device to cause a person pain? No, they don’t. There is no physical punishment associated with being a Witness. Everything with them is mental and mind games but no one is going to physically hurt anyone. In fact, they are very much pacifists.
Except for spankings. I’m not sure where their stance is on that at the moment but when I was growing up spankings were a-ok with this group. In fact, I was encouraged to spank my own children. I was very young when I was encouraged to get married and have children so I’m afraid to say I followed that advice for a while. Thankfully I came to my senses and realized that hitting children should never be acceptable. Probably the best thing I ever did for my children was to cut all ties with the Witnesses.
I survived this cult too. My parents became witnesses when I was 6, my dad was disfellowshipped when I was around 12, so our whole family left “the truth”. They went back when I was 16 and my dad was reinstated. I never baptized. They tried to get my sister and I to go back, but we were almost combative over it. No way. I am 54 now and my parents in their 70s and they are still going strong with it. Some of the things they say around other people embarasses me, because everything they are taught is by the Society, and just a group of old men that don’t know shit about shit. My mom said that Mormons are Devil Worshippers and I had to correct her because Mormons are Mormons and Devil Worshippers are Satanists. But JW believe everything is Satanic. EVERYTHING. The brain washing I received was crazy. I couldn’t enter another church for years and it took me forever to relax around Christmas. Things are much better in my life now. Their teachings are so random and insane.

He changed that as well as the original Sabbath Saturday to the now popular Sunday the first day of the week named after the SUN GOD!!! My husband and I were both raised JW but on opposite sides of the world. A lot of this stuff on the list we experienced and more. They do use biblical scriptures as their reasoning even if it does make sense. They don’t believe in Jesus or preach from the new testament. They say Jesus was a profit like John the baptist. They are so much about money. If you don’t tithe at least 10% of what you’re worth then your out. They don’t pass a plate, they had a mail slot for checks. Now days it’s probably autopay. And if you’re in the hospital ready to kick, they’re right there waiting to get involved like vultures. I don’t fault people that want it but it’s not a good cult in my opinion. Any religion that wants your obedience and your money is for those who want to submit control.

No wonder why JW are so ignorant about science and history. They are not allowed to think for themselves, question the church teachings and above all read any books on science. Since science books and history books will show how wrong the bible is in these areas, since such books will explain were their fact come from, and the methods of how they got the facts and data. Also will point to other publications and website, that are not other around the world. Also most of those publications will be written by people who have gone to school to learn and become experts in those fields, as well as research and study that subject through out there lives.

This is outdated. A lot of those rules have been slightly changed since the release of the updated Bible. The facial hair and length of hair don’t really matter as much as they used to, for one. Any guy can have a beard, they just can’t look like Santa Claus is in there, and Even though I’m not an elder I have seen many teens who grow their facial hair leave just because they want everything their way. Everyone knows it’s difficult to have things go their way especially if your a teen.
There’s always a loophole to everything if you just look for it, but most people don’t. They rather comply or leave instead of looking for what they may be. There are options to everything, people just don’t want to look for them. Is it a bit two faced…sure, but if it’s a necessary thing to do, then do it.
